20,842 fans saw the thrilling boxers Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) and Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) square off. Davis won because of a strong left hand to Garcia’s body. It made Garcia react and then take a knee.
“I didn’t think that body shot would end it, but I saw his facial expression and that’s what made me take it to him,” said Davis. “It was a good shot, for sure. I thought he would get up. But I like to play mind games. So, when he looked at me, I looked at him. I was trying to tell him, ‘get up!’ But he shook his head, no.” “He caught me with a good shot,” said Garcia. “I don’t want to make any excuses in here. He caught me with a good shot and I couldn’t recover and that’s it. He caught me with a good body shot, snuck under me and caught me good. I couldn’t breathe. I was going to get back up, but I couldn’t get up.”
Garcia tried to stand as referee Thomas Taylor counted. But, the referee declared him out at 1:44 of the round because he was in pain. Davis holds the WBA Lightweight Title. He has also won at super featherweight and super lightweight. It was his fourth straight knockout. After a cautious opening, Garcia was the first to test the limits. He blitzed Davis early in the second round to land his trademark power left hook. But Davis soon reversed the momentum. He put Garcia down with a strong left hook after he ducked under a left hook.
Garcia got up, but he was never as forceful after the initial knockdown. “The first knockdown was him not knowing his placement,” said Davis. I knew I was smaller. In camp, my coach told me he’d come with his head up. So, shoot over the top. “I should have pressured him a little harder near the ropes,” said Garcia. “I was giving him a little bit too much respect and that was my downfall. I gave him a little too much respect in the ring.”
CompuBox reports that Davis landed eighteen body shots during the fight. They were the last shots that ended it and were a crucial weapon. Both boxers connected on 48% of their power punches. But, Garcia only managed 42%. The scores were 59-55, 59-56, and 58-56 at the time of the break. Davis had taken the lead on all three cards and had said he was the new face of the game. “I’m definitely the face of boxing,” said Davis. “Absolutely!”
